| Hazardous Materials Management Program
The purpose of the Hazardous Materials Management Program is to monitor
University compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations
regarding the purchase, use, storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
The University is committed to hazardous waste minimization through the use
of microscale laboratory experiments, substitution of less hazardous
reagents and products, recycling and other appropriate means. Each
department that purchases and uses hazardous materials must address this
issue in its safety and environmental health plan. The University currently
meets the EPA requirements for “Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity
Generators” of hazardous wastes because the total for all departments does
not exceed 100 kg.in a single calendar month and accumulations of wastes do
not ever exceed 1000 kg. Accurate records must be kept of wastes generated
or disposed of by all departments on campus in order to maintain this
status. Declared wastes must be reported to the EHS office and stored safely
until disposal arrangements can be made. Disposal of hazardous materials is
coordinated by the Environmental Health & Safety Office, but each department
is responsible for the cost of disposing of the waste generated in its area.
